Engineers are dealing with a "complex situation" after a lorry driver died in a crash on the M27 near Southampton Airport.
The westbound carriageway remains closed between junctions nine and five following the collision involving a lorry and two cars shortly after 12.30pm on Wednesday.
A man in his 30s died at the scene.
National Highways said a gantry was badly damaged in the crash and it will have to be removed because it is unsafe.
It is not known how long the removal will take and drivers were urged to plan their journeys before setting off.
Mark Hallett, National Highways operations manager, said: "Any loss of life on our network is a tragedy and our thoughts are with those affected by what happened yesterday.
"This is a complex situation and removing the damaged gantry will take a number of hours.
"This is a structure that is nine metres tall and spans multiple lanes of traffic."
