Strong winds and heavy rain batter sailors in Round the Island race
The 87th edition of the race has gone ahead despite some classes being cancelled at the last minute
Sailors are braving strong winds and heavy rain as they make their way around the Isle of Wight in one of sailing's most iconic races.
The 87th Round the Island Yacht Race got underway at 6am on Saturday.
Around 7000 sailors are making their way around the 50 nautical course around the island, which starts and finishes in Cowes
Some classes were cancelled on Friday in anticipation of the weather, but most have taken place as normal.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, event organiser Dave Atkinson says the annual race remains incredibly popular with spectators.
"A lot of people don't get outside the Solent, so the thought of going round the back of the island and into the English channel is a challenge in itself."
He added the race allows sailors to do it safely, as "they've got 1000 other boats around them."
Mr Atkinson added that many little rivalries form between those taking part, including the island's schools.
"Other mariners get together and say 'we're going to beat you', and do this and do that.
"There's all those sub-races that kick in, and that's what makes it interesting as far as everybody is concerned."
