Police have criticised four drivers recorded at speeds of more than 100mph on a stretch of the A27 where a man died in a crash last week.

Officers set up patrols between Emsworth and Southbourne on Saturday (February 13th) in response to the incident, which happened late last Wednesday night (February 10th).

Pictures posted on Twitter showed the four had been clocked at speeds of 105mph, 106mph, 109mph and 111mph - all within an hour of each other.

In the tweet, posted by the Sussex Roads Policing Unit, officers said all would have had to have passed boards appealing for information about Wednesday's tragic incident at the time of the offences.

A 25-year-old man from Havant was pronounced dead at the scene after the Volkswagen Golf he was driving left the eastbound road and collided with the central reservation at around 11.40pm on Wednesday.

The passenger, a 19-year-old man from Havant, suffered life-threatening injuries.

He remained in a serious but stable condition at Southampton General Hospital as of Friday night.

A 20-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both from Havant, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They have since been released on conditional bail until March 10th, pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses and are particularly interested to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of the collision, or the Golf or a red Audi A3 being driven in the area prior to the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Westdown.
