A controlled explosion has been carried out on a Selsey beach after multiple pieces of ordnance were found there on Tuesday February 23rd.
Coastguards from the town were paged to Medmerry Beach at just before 2pm.
The West Sussex beach was closed while the item was investigated the find, made by a member of the public.
It was found to be the top of an old World War II sea mine which was not complete and has been removed from the area.
Searches found more potentially explosive items, leading to the Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team being called out.
They detonated the other items found safely at around 5.30pm, with the beach being reopened to the public once safe.
A spokesperson for the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said:
"Ordnance comes in all different shapes and sizes, if you come across anything suspicious or unusual on the beach, please don't touch it and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
"Ordnance found on this beach in the past has been found to still be highly explosive, so please do not touch it and call the Coastguard straight away."
