Another delay to M27 smart motorway
Highways England insists good progress is being made
You'll have to put up with the 50 speed limit on the M27 for at least another eight months.
Work to turn it into a smart motorway has been delayed again.
Highways England began work two-and-a-half years ago.
£244m is being spent changing the hard shoulder into a live lane between junctions 4 near Southampton and 11 for Fareham.
It was supposed to be complete in Spring this year but that's now been pushed back to Spring 2022.
Bosses say the delay is partly down to safety recommendations from the Government, which include new vehicle detection technology.
Highways England M27 route sponsor, John Henderson said:
“We are making good progress with the upgrade to the M27, and have committed to implementing the recommendations of the Government stocktake before the scheme opens fully. This means it will include stopped vehicle detection technology.
“We are grateful for everyone’s patience while we complete this work, and we expect the upgrade to be fully open in spring 2022.”
