An animal rescue charity in Dorset has revealed its overflowing with dogs and is taking calls every day from people wanting to give up their pets.

Waggy Tails Rescue in Wimborne says it's here to help but is struggling to find space and afford the cost of dog food.

In a statement, the charity said: "Animal Rescues are currently overflowing with dogs waiting to be rehomed. Those dogs waiting in the pounds only have seven days, after which time, if not offered a rescue place, can be euthanised.

"The owners of some of these dogs can be traced but cannot afford the fee to reclaim them, but far too many have out of date microchip details.

"Waggy Tails Rescue is currently full and still every day we are taking calls from people wanting to give up their pets. The lockdown pups are still filtering through; oldies usurped by a younger dog; inappropriate purchases in haste or online; dogs from overseas with no back up in the UK; the list goes on.

"We do all we can to help, so if you are struggling with a pet please give us a ring on 01202 875000. Our office is open from 10am-4pm weekdays and until 1pm at the weekend. We will be pleased to advise you of your options.

"We also support other rescues and the foodbanks with donations when we are able, but with so many mouths to feed at the moment, we are putting out a Christmas wish list for good quality dry food, tins of Chappie and Dentastix. If you are able to donate anything, your gift can be delivered to the Sanctuary."
