A man from Tamworth has become the first in the West Midlands to be sentenced for riot following widespread unrest across the UK over the summer.

Simon Orr, 38, from Grazier Avenue, Tamworth, was sentenced to six years and 17 weeks after admitting his part in the violence that targeted a Holiday Inn in the town, which was housing migrants, on 4 August.

Rioting spread across the country over the summer after three little girls were killed in Southport on 29 July. Bebe King, aged six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, aged nine, were stabbed at a Taylor Swift dance class.

Adam Till, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This sentence reflects the seriousness of Simon Orr's actions and sends a clear message that unlawful violence which endangers public safety will not be tolerated.

"The Crown Prosecution Service is continuing to work closely with Staffordshire Police to ensure those responsible for the disorder are brought to justice. Our priority is to protect the public from violence and ensure that those who engage in such acts are brought to justice to face the full consequences of the law.”
