Domestic abuse charities expecting rise in calls following New Year
Charities like Women's Aid see a 15 percent increase over the Christmas period.
Charities across the West Midlands have said they are prepared to deal with an increasing number of calls for help from people experiencing domestic abuse.
Figures suggest, nationally, there is a rise of around 15 percent in the number of calls made to organisations like Women's Aid over the festive period.
The charity has said that Christmas often brings increased pressure on households -financially, with families coming together, and additional alcohol - which can contribute to incidents of violence.
Sara Ward, Chief Executive Officer at Black Country Women's Aid, said: "Every Christmas, there are pressures on victims to try and hold things together. The financial pressures, families being together who wouldn't normally, and tensions within those families.
"People feel like they have to hold it together, and make sure the children have a great time. Lots of people make those decisions, but I would say please do not put yourself or your children in danger whatsoever.
In a message to victim, she added: "Please know that the police will respond, they are well prepared for these pressured times. We are ready to take calls and to provide help and support - people do not have to suffer or to experience domestic abuse during this time."
