West Midlands Police target 2,000 drivers in 'Fatal Four' crackdown
Over half of the drivers caught have been for alleged drink and drug driving offences
More than 2,000 drivers have been targeted by West Midlands Police during their latest crackdown on the 'Fatal Four'.
Since January, the force have been focusing on reducing incidents of speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones.
1,252 people were arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving in the first six months of this year.
West Midlands Police say a campaign during the Euros football tournament saw a 7.5% in related offences during this year's event, compared to the 2021 edition.
478 motorists were also caught speeding, 144 were caught not wearing a seatbelt and 344 were caught using mobile phones.
Chief Inspector Keeley Bevington from West Midlands Police's traffic unit, said:
"Every death on our roads is a tragedy that leaves lasting scars on communities.
"It’s a crisis that demands urgent action.
"Drivers need to understand the deadly consequences of their actions.
"We're working hard with partners to make our roads safer, but everyone needs to play their part and drive carefully.
"Speeding is a reckless gamble with lives that can have fatal results.
"The vast majority of motorists drive responsibly, but a persistent minority continue to endanger lives.
"We will not tolerate this behaviour and will pursue the strongest possible penalties for offenders."
Anyone who spots dangerous driving is being encouraged to report it online, including by sharing any footage.
