Oxford United have made their first summer signing ahead of their return to the Championship.

Midfielder Will Vaulks will join the U's on July 1 after his contract with Sheffield Wednesday expires.

The 30-year-old has played 222 times in English football's second-tier, including stints at Rotherham, Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday.

He joins Des Buckingham's squad ahead of Oxford United's first season in the Championship in 25 years.

Writing on the club's website, Vaulks said he was "really impressed" by the U's ambition, saying it's a "club that wants to go in the right direction."

"What you will get from me is that I can look anyone in the eye and say I will give the club everything. I will work harder than anyone on the pitch and give my all."

Head coach Des Buckingham said Vaulks "brings a quality and experience" that will be crucial in the Championship.

"Will brings real quality to us on the pitch, and he will be an important player in our midfield going forward."
