The Married At First Sight star, 52, was diagnosed in December 2023 just before Christmas after she began experiencing symptoms while filming the Australian version of the show.

Mel became concerned after losing her appetite, resulting in rapid weight loss, and struggling to hold down water.

Following a GP appointment about her symptoms, Mel was referred for a CT scan which confirmed she had bowel cancer.

Mel then underwent keyhole surgery, at a London based hospital in December 2023 to remove the tumour and was back at work within weeks.

Speaking about her experience Mel's stance was very clear: "If there is a message here, put that embarrassment aside because it could be life threatening, so get over the embarrassment and get a poo test.

Since partnering with the Oxford Colon Cancer Trust also known as Occtopus, Mel has been working closely with Chair of the charity Professor Sir Neil Mortensen.

Sir Neil has highlighted some of the key symptoms you need to look out for: "If you notice a change in your poo, diarrhea, constipation, blood in the school, tummy aches or unexplained weight loss and fatigue get it checked out".

Sir Neil also spoke about how people's expectations of the disease often don't line up with the reality.

"People's expectations around Bowel cancer are that it's always serious and you'll always end up with a colostomy bag but it's not like that only a tiny proportion of patients end up with a colostomy."

As well as not being ashamed to speak to a doctor Mel highlighted the importance of being aware.

"There are genetic factors at play, lifestyle factors at play and I'd imagine a bit of luck as well.

"But no one really knows and that's why we have to be alert and aware, listening to our bodies and taking action not ignoring symptoms."
