A man who targeted and raped a woman in Oxford has been jailed for 12 years following a Thames Valley Police investigation.

Appearing at Oxford Crown Court, Khaliz Ali Jaber Alshimery, aged 46, formerly of Grenoble Road, Oxford, was sentenced for one count each of rape and sexual assault by penetration and three counts of sexual assault by touching.

He had previously been found guilty by unanimous jury verdict of the offences.

In the early hours of 19 November last year, Alshimery targeted a woman aged in her twenties who he knew was alone.

He followed the victim out of the town and sexually assaulted her in a doorway near to the Plain roundabout.

Two unidentified members of the public intervened in the offence and the victim was able to escape.

These members of the public have never come forward to the police.

Despite this, Alshimery continued to follow the victim at distance, and then pulled her into the churchyard of St Clements Church in Marston Road, where he subjected the victim to a rape.

Alshimery was very quickly identified and was arrested by officers the following day.

He was charged on 21 November.

Detective Inspector Krista Thompson, of Oxford CID, said: “This was a shocking case where the victim was attacked by a complete stranger.

“Alshimery identified that the victim was alone, and took advantage of this for his own gratification.

“The victim had every right to feel safe in our city, and my belief is she was targeted because she was alone.

“I would like to recognised and pay tribute to the victim in this case. She has displayed tremendous dignity and bravery to support our investigation to bring a dangerous offender to justice.

“Alshimery will serve a considerable custodial sentence as a result of his actions that night, and removing him from the streets makes Oxford a safer place for women and girls.

“It is a top priority of Thames Valley Police to tackle violence against women and girls in all its forms, and I am pleased that Alshimery is now in prison where he belongs."
