A Police Community Support Officer is taking to buses in York, in a bid to improve engagement with residents.

PCSO Ollie Maskell will be boarding popular First Bus routes, to chat to members of the community about the issues that matter to them.

It's hoped the initiative will help customers to be more confident as lockdown restrictions ease.

The project also means anti-social behaviour can be dealt with on streets around bus routes by PCSOs, if it occurs.

PCSO Ollie Maskell, from the York Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "It’s been a tough year for people and they may not have had chance to speak to anyone about the issues that affect them and the community they live in.

"But the further easing of lockdown restrictions and the success of the vaccine rollout so far means public spaces and public transport are getting busier as some sort of normality returns.

"This can be daunting for people who’ve got used to things being the way they’ve been during lockdown – their daily surroundings suddenly feel busier and noisier."
