'On the day of the 1966 World Cup final we lost our honeymoon booking!'
York City FC director Richard Adams has shared memories of his eventful day back in 1966 - and looks ahead to Sunday's Euro 2020 final with Italy.
Build up is continuing to Sunday's Euro 2020 final between England and Italy - England's men side's first major tournament final since 1966.
For many fans across York and North Yorkshire, Sunday will be the first major final they've experienced.
York City FC director Richard Adams remembers watching the game, and had quite the eventful day leading up to it: "In 1966 I was living in Northallerton and it was a big year for me, because I was planning a wedding. The wedding planning clashed with the World Cup, and on the day in question I was meeting my future wife off a train from Scarborough.
"Unfortunately, the train was delayed for some time. When it arrived I had some other things to do as we'd booked to go to Jersey on honeymoon.
"On that particular day we were going into towns to collect tickets for the flights from the planned wedding in Scarborough to the honeymoon. We walked into town to the travel agents to find out that the young lady who had taken our bookings had absconded with the money!
"No bookings had taken place, so whilst planning for a wedding I found out that we had no honeymoon. This was a total disaster for my future wife as she wasn't into football as much as me, so we settled for a week's break in London whilst trying to sort out a new booking.
"When I got home to my parent's we caught kick off just in time. The game itself ended up on the right side as far as England is concerned, and I still say to this day that VAR would show that Geoff Hurst's goal DID cross the line!
"The day didn't start very well, but it finished very well as far as I'm concerned!"
Richard reckons England were always destined to win in 1966: "I've been following football now for 70 years, and every game you take on its merits. There are games that you just get the feeling that the game was going to go right.
"Even after Denmark scored first in the game on Wednesday night I didn't panic. I don't think anybody really panicked back in 1966 either - I just had that feeling that we were going to win.
"I think England will win on Sunday - whether it's in extra time I don't know. When I watched Italy play Spain I didn't fear either side, and I don't think Gareth Southgate will fear them either.
"Italy have always been a very defensive side, and it's up to our speed up front to break down that defence. They have one or two ageing defenders and after playing their game against Spain there'll be some tired legs. Hopefully our young guns can put the pace in.
"I'm quite confident that we can go all the way this time".
