Over 10,000 expected to take part in Yorkshire Marathon Festival
The event is taking place today and raises thousands for charity
Over 10,000 people runners are expected in York today for the Yorkshire Marathon Festival.
It starts and finishes at the University of York and raises thousands of pounds for charity.
Staged under the umbrella of Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, the UK’s largest not-for-profit events company, the Yorkshire Marathon Festival has firmly established itself as one of the region’s most anticipated annual sporting events.
Participants have been encouraged to fundraise for a charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities; St Leonard’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Age UK York, Yorkshire Cancer Research, The Island and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.
Launched in 2013, the Yorkshire Marathon Festival was born with the aim of giving all abilities the opportunity to achieve something amazing and to facilitate a fundraising vehicle for many local and national charities. Since 2013, over 90,000 participants have taken part in the event and over ÂŁ7.5 million has been raised for charity.
Attracting runners of all ages and abilities, the event has received support far and wide, participants from all corners of the globe are set to travel to the city of York for the event.
Runners can look forward to a party from start to finish, from on-course music zones to post-race celebrations in the event village, both races are set to create an unbeatable atmosphere across the city.
Starting and finishing at the University of York, the Yorkshire Marathon will get underway at 9.30am, followed by the Yorkshire 10 Mile at 10.15am.
The marathon course first decorates local sights such as York Minster and the ancient city walls, before travelling north eastwards out of the city.
Participants will travel through Stockton on the Forest, Grange Wood, Upper Helmsley, Stamford Bridge, Gate Helmsley, Turkers Wood, Murton, Osbaldwick and back towards Heslington.
The Yorkshire 10 Mile takes in much of the same route over a shorter distance, while in the Yorkshire Marathon relay, teams of six colleagues, friends or teammates come together to each take on a leg of the marathon, to complete the full marathon distance.
Marathon runners will also be joined by a host of famous faces including comedians Rob Deering and Paul Tonkinson.
A number of road closures and restrictions will be in place to ensure the safety of all those taking part.
