Yellow warning may push rainfall above average in North Yorkshire
The Met Office say September's been drier than usual so far
People in North Yorkshire are being urged to brace for heavy rainfall today as a yellow weather warning has been issued until midnight. The Met Office warns that today's rain could push this month’s rainfall above the average for September.
Up until now, the region has experienced a notably drier September compared to previous years. According to the Met Office, rainfall levels have been below what is typically expected for this time of year, but that could soon change.
Zoe Hutin, a meteorologist at the Met Office, explains that today’s downpour is the result of several factors coming together, she said:
“There is low pressure moving throughout the UK and with it a band of rain which is associated with it which will make its way across the Northern part of the country bringing with it some fairly persistent outbreaks of rain these at times could be heavy and quite prolonged.”
With the rain set to cause potential travel disruptions and localized flooding, the Met Office is advising people in affected areas to plan ahead and stay informed on the latest weather updates.
Zoe adds:
“If your property is prone to flooding, take some precautions and to try and prevent the worst of the impacts or don't be in your property at that time. Probably more widely will be disruption to travel. So looking at roads and potentially railways, railways and train lines as well. There can be a lot of surface water causing spray.”
