Volunteers wanted to join Whitby Street Angels
Teams patrol the town centre on Saturday nights helping anyone who's in need
More volunteers are wanted to become a Whitby Street Angel.
It is where teams patrol the town centre on Saturday nights from 10pm to 2am helping anyone who is in need.
There is only six active members at the moment but around 20 is needed to cover a whole month.
Secretary Sandra Turner has been doing it for about seven years and said:
"So we're there to offer a welcoming smile and a helping hand so that people will feel safe and have an enjoyable night out. So we do that by chatting, giving directions, offering flip flops to girls who've been dancing too long in their high heels, we give basic first aid and we keep an eye out for anyone who's looking a bit vulnerable.
"An example is a man who was at Whitby Bus Station. He'd miss his last train, he had no money and no food. He lived 40 miles away and he was in a special social services housing. So we rang social services and they provided a taxi to get him home and we gave him some food, so he went home happy.
"There's lots of little things and then sometimes somebody has fallen and hurt themselves and they just need us to stay with them until an ambulance arrives. There's very rarely a night out where you don't think 'I'm glad we were there'. There's always something that happens that you've made a difference.
"We desperately need volunteers because we only have six active people at the moment and that means we can only cover two Saturdays in the month, whereas we want to cover all the Saturdays in the month. Each volunteer is only asked to do one shift a month."
They are also appealing for any businesses to offer space as a temporary base so volunteers can take breaks during the night.
Anyone who wishes to help as a volunteer or to offer a base, can contact Whitby Street Angels on their website or Facebook page.
