Whitby RNLI has had its first shout for 2023.

The inshore lifeboat was launched on Monday (2nd January) after reports of a surfer in difficulty.

Both the RNLI and HM Coastguard attended the ravine area of Whitby where the surfer was spotted.

The inshore lifeboat crew reached the surfer and established that they were in fact OK and that the call had been made with good intent by a member of the public.

Helm on the inshore lifeboat, Leah Hunter said: "We would like to thank the person who made the call for being vigilant, we would always say if you’re in any doubt as to whether someone may be in difficulty in the water, make the call. We would always rather turn out and find out that the person is safe - it’s what we’re here for."

If you do spot someone in trouble in the water contact the Coastguard by dialling 999.
