Whitby pay-as-you-feel food project still sees high demand
The People's Kitchen aims to give out food and meals to those in need
A project in Whitby which provides food and meals to people in need is still seeing a high demand.
The People's Kitchen has been operating from inside Flowergate Hall Community Art Centre.
It aims to give out food and meals on a pay-as-you-feel basis or for free if you cannot afford to.
Rebecca Denniff, Director of Flash Company Arts, who runs the project, said: "We've been running one of the North Yorkshire County Council programme for young people. So one of the things that we're doing all week is we're feeding a lot of young people, a lot of whom receive free school meals and we're doing some nutrition guidance and lots of arts and crafts too.
"We're doing arts cafe sessions where not only can people come along and get their food, they can also draw something. Next Friday we're going to be doing jewellery making.
"Demand is high but so is fear. People who we work with we've found they're happy to come and talk to us individually but they're frightened of spending time in a big group. So our mission now is to coax people who are feeling lonely and isolated to spend some time with us.
"We've all been through such a traumatic time. You can't just flick a switch on a given day and be told everything will be back to normal. We're slowly building on all the efforts that we've made so we can meet the needs of the community.
"At the moment we're not doing delivery however if anybody really needed food delivering to them, if we found there was a demand, we would DEFINITELY try to support people and that's something we're co-ordinating because we've got our community fridge."
