People in Whitby are being encouraged to take on rowing to help improve their physical and mental health.

The town's Fishermen's Rowing Club is holding an open day today from 1pm at its base on Market Place.

It is looking for more members before the new season starts in April.

The club's captain Mark Harland said: "It's open to anyone from 11 and we currently have members up to 85-years-old. If people would like to give rowing a try, they're more than welcome to come down. It's free of charge, there's changing facilities available and then we've got bar facilities upstairs for a drink for everybody to socialise afterwards.

"There's a lot about mental health at the moment and exercise is excellent for your mental health. It's brilliant for fitness, it's socialising, you get to know people and there's a little bit of competitiveness in there as we row against Whitby Friendship Rowing Club and Scarborough Rowing Club and then we finish with the big Whitby Regatta at the end of the season.

"It's our first full season back since Covid. We only did the two Regattas last season and we'd like some more members really to make the races more competitive. We're looking ideally for junior members, from the ages of 11 to 20, but as I say, anyone's more than welcome."
