People in Whitby are being reminded to go for their coronavirus vaccinations when asked to do so.

It is as the programme in the town is going well with the Whitby, Coast and Moors NHS Primary Care Network running a vaccination centre at Whitby Pavilion.

Dr Simon Stockill, Clinical Director, said:

"We took a decision in December of last year that we would host and run a vaccination clinic and since 22nd of December, we've vaccinated over 25,000 people with a vaccine dose and that's nearly 10,000 patients now who have been fully vaccinated.

"We've got about another 5,000 people who are due their first dose of a vaccine in the next few weeks, we're calling recalling people, we've got clinics running every week and they're people from the age group from 18 up to 39, that's the next group that we are now vaccinating.

"Generally, we've had a fantastic response from the local population to get their vaccines certainly in the early days with the older population, many of these people had been shielding or had taken their own decision not to leave home really other than for very limited purposes.

"There have been some issues as you'll know recently about a very, very small risk, a very rare reaction with the AstraZeneca vaccine regarding blood clots, but this is in the range of about one in a million risk to people whereas the risk of contracting coronavirus and then having either covid, long covid or even more complicated issues, is a much, much greater risk."
