There is an urgent appeal for pet foster carers in North Yorkshire as an increasing number of owners give up their animals because of the cost of living.

Staff at the Blue Cross Centre in Thirsk say many simply cannot afford pet food or expensive vet bills.

Danielle Sherriff is the centre manager and she said: "A lot of people are losing their homes, they just can't afford to just pay the basic of bills so we're seeing a real influx. Our waiting lists are bigger than ever.

"We really focus on welfare here at Blue Cross so what we try and fulfil for all our pets is to try and get them into a lovely foster home, rather than placing them into a kennel, so we're needing more and more people to sign up as foster carers."

It would be a short term agreement. Jenny Day is the volunteer co-ordinator there and she said: "It's purely just as long as the pets are going through the rehoming process and it really depends on how quickly we can re-home the pets as well. We're very flexible about timescales with our fosterers."
