Two men arrested on suspicion of rape in York

Police have arrested two men in connection with a rape in York yesterday morning (29th August).

Officers arrested two suspects, aged 20 and 18, on suspicion of the offence yesterday evening.

They both remain in custody.

The incident occurred between 3.30am and 4am on Wednesday 28 August in the Piccadilly and North Street areas.

The arrests followed an immediate and extensive investigation by North Yorkshire Police officers, including CCTV and forensic examination.

Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page said:

"This is a shocking incident, and I understand it will have caused significant concern in the local community. Two suspects have now been arrested, and our enquiries are ongoing, so I would urge anyone who has information that could assist us to get in touch.

"Officers from York's Neighbourhood Policing Team will be on patrol in the city centre today and into the weekend, and will be able to provide extra reassurance to members of the public."

The victim is continuing to receive specialist support.
