'Strict rules' applied to Scarborough train depot as new timetable comes in
TransPennine Express will have its Nova 3s at the Seamer Road facility again
TransPennine Express says timetable changes from today means Scarborough's depot will be used again.
In the past, the facility on Seamer Road disrupted people's sleep which affected their mental and physical wellbeing.
It is because TransPennine Express's Nova 3 trains were being maintained there overnight causing noise nuisance.
Paul Staples, the company's fleet, safety and service delivery manager, said: "It involves a lot of extra services to support the economic recovery of the North of England. We're having to deploy more of our Nova 3 trains. We'll be making more use of Scarborough but as we said when we closed Scarborough down the last time, what we won't be doing is running engines overnight so we have a new method of work.
"Other trains will go onto the depot earlier in the evening and what we've done is to set up very strict rules to say that they A. have to use the engines as little as possible, so for roughly 45 to 50 minutes in the evening and for no more than 20 minutes in the morning and B. They absolutely cannot run engines in the normal run of things between 11pm and 7am.
"We remain insistent that we cannot run these Class 68 locomotive engines in that very quiet period of the night because the background noise of the town drops as people sleep. Therefore it becomes very noticeable but we have to use these trains to provide the connections that Scarborough needs to grow as a town.
"The only circumstances you should ever hear engines running in those times is if there was a really big network incident that caused late arrivals of trains. If anything happened we would try and do it during the day where Scarborough as a whole is noisier so we would stand out less."
