York Minster to hold service of Thanksgiving for the RNLI
It's to help mark 200 years of the life saving service
A special service of thanksgiving is being held at York Minster today for the RNLI.
The last time a significant event like this took place at the Minster was to mark the 175th anniversary in 1999.
During this service, the RNLI says it will commemorate 'those who have gone before us, celebrate our incredible volunteers of today, and inspire the next generation of lifesavers.'
To mark the 200th anniversary we've been hearing from members of the RNLI in North Yorkshire about what the organisation means to them.
Richard Dowson is the station mechanic in Whitby: "We're a coastal nation, we are drawn to the water as humans so having a dedicated service to saving lives at sea is phenomenal really."
"The good times outweigh the bad massively, we're like a small family unit here, all the crews, we have a great crack with one another. Yes it is my job I work with a lot of volunteers but it's more like a hobby to me than an actual job."
Richard re calls one of his more memorable rescues: "The weather was that bad that we couldn't actually return back into Whitby with a vessel, we had to tow it up to the River Tees, we were out for about 12 or 13 hours in total and one of our engines failed as well but that's just what the sort of things that we can have thrown at us. You never know what is round the corner."
Whilst the service is a private ticketed event, anyone can watch the live stream from 2pm The stream will be available for 30 day after the service has taken place.
