Families in Scarborough needing school uniform for their children can get it for FREE today.

The clothing is being given away at Westborough Methodist Church, opposite the Railway Station, from 3pm to 5pm.

It is part of a new second-hand uniform recycling scheme in Scarborough.

Tom Clayton started it and said:

"It's been really moving. We had our giveaway event last week and one of our volunteers when they'd finish came up and said 'I just had took such delight in watching them come down and the smiles on their faces and on the kids as well.'

"There was one little girl who came, got a new cardigan for school and she wouldn't take it off. It was on there and she wasn't taking it off for anything and that's been wonderful, but I think that was the overriding memory of that first event was just the smile on people's faces when they came up.

"School uniform, particularly when you get to secondary, but even at primary level can be a really prohibitive cost and I know changes are being made. There was a change in the law earlier this year to make sure schools offer uniform that might be available in supermarkets rather than branded ones.

"I know one school in Scarborough, they've moved to stitch-on badges that you can put on to cheaper items but there are plenty of places where that's not the case."
