The MP for Scarborough and Whitby is thanking those who are helping at the vaccination centres.

Earlier this week we heard from a doctor and a nurse who have been dishing out jabs at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Nearly 145,000 jabs have been given out across the borough so far with just over 440,000 in the East Riding.

Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, said:

"I just think we're all in their debt; particularly the volunteers who have been working sorting out the car parks, making sure the queues are maintained in an orderly way and of course people who have been doing the vaccination as well, some of whom have been doing it voluntarily. So on behalf of everybody in the Scarborough and Whitby constituency thank you very much for what you are doing.

"I was up at Scarborough Rugby Club the other day and they were very disappointed I'd not gone to get a vaccination. I don't know if it's because they wanted to help me and show me where to go or if it's because they were looking forward to seeing someone stick a needle into their Member of Parliament but either way, they were very cheerful and I was chatting them and I took the opportunity to thank the ones who were there for what they were doing.

"Many people when they go for their vaccination, they're a bit nervous, they're not sure where they're going, they may be nervous about any potential reaction and certainly the evidence from what I saw was that everyone was being reassured, was being told exactly what the situation was and thank goodness we've been so successful in getting so many vaccinations into people's arms."

Many volunteers who have been dishing out the jabs are retired doctors and nurses.

Robert added:

"Giving vaccinations, to understand if someone has a reaction what you should do, so those peolpe have been trained and they have years of experience, so they're ideally placed to come and do the vaccination programme and make sure everyone feels safe and secure, so particularly thank you very much indeed.

"Doing it as a volunteer means that we have more money for other things in the health service. We're not paying doctors and nurses to do that work as much, although I know many doctors and nurses are doing it as part of their job and thank you as well, but I think particularly thanks goes to the volunteers."
