The MP for Scarborough and Whitby says it is right for the government not to rush into Plan B.

There has been criticism from some for delaying the introduction of tighter measures to combat the spread of Coronavirus, like wearing face coverings and working from home.

Earlier this month a report criticised the delay in introducing lockdown last year.

Robert Goodwill said:

"As we go into this Autumn, the situation is very different to the one we had 18 months ago because we now have not only a vaccine but a very, very large proportion of the most vulnerable people have been vaccinated with two vaccines and we're already starting to get people with their third.

"The chances of going into hospital or the chances of dying are about 90 percent less from a double vaccinated person and indeed when you look at people who are currently dying from the disease, they're the people, in the main, with five or even six pre-existing medical conditions.

"The government is right to keep all options open but at the moment it seems that the disease is, whilst it's increasing, it's increasing in a manageable way and most importantly, the number of hospital admissions are at a level which can be accommodated within the NHS.

"Wearing a mask is only part of the way that we can combat this disease and the spread of the disease is very much under control. We're not seeing the massive numbers of hospitalisations that we've seen in the past."
