A series of communication workshops around Scarborough is aiming to bring communities together.

The 'Scarborough Stories' project will be running over the coming months where professionals will help people speak their mind in whichever ways they like.

The scheme will lead to a show which will be held in the town centre in July this year, created in co-production with the Stephen Joseph Theatre and working with a team of creative talent from around the country.

It is being put together by ARCADE and has been made possible through the support of Coast and Vale Community Action and funded by Yorkshire Coast BID and Arts Council England.

Jim Taylor, Assistant Producer, said: "Scarborough Stories is about everybody coming together to tell a story that they're passionate about that's happening in their life or in their community. A part of that is us running a bunch of workshops with professional artists, helping people tell their stories across different media.

"We've got photography, songwriting, poetry, textile art, we're booking in a film one and just every different type of way that we have of telling a story. We're trying to reconnect people with what's going on around them and learning to tell our own stories in the best way possible and also to listen to other people's.

"We've been identifying a lot of community leaders so that we've been going and doing idea exchange workshops with them, where we go and find out what the challenges are for people who may be wouldn't normally get involved in a project like this and where access problems might be, so that's actually helped change the project.

"We now have a Facebook group and we're running #ScarboroughStories across Instagram to allow people who are still concerned about the virus or who are maybe housebound, or have social anxiety issues or any of those kind of things. We're trying to remove as many barriers as possible to get people involved and the feedback on that has been amazing."

The project is open to everyone, no threatre or writing experience is needed with inclusive and inspiring partcipatory workshops which are taking place.
