This weekend’s planned Scarborough Sparkle event at the town’s Open Air Theatre has been cancelled following the latest weather warning associated with Storm Arwen.

The annual Christmas themed shopping and entertainment weekend was due to take place from tomorrow evening (Friday 26th November) to Sunday 28 November.

Storm Arwen is predicted to bring northerly gusts of 65 to 75 mph southwards along the Yorkshire Coast and right through the Open Air Theatre during Friday and Saturday.

The cancellation has been based on this warning and the concerns of Scarborough Borough Council as event organiser and stallholders about the high risk to people and infrastructure.

Cllr Jim Grieve, Scarborough Borough Council, cabinet member for quality of life, said:

“We’ve not this decision lightly and we’ve made it in full consultation with the many fantastic businesses that attend and support our event.

“The safety of everyone involved and their livelihoods must come first.

“Like us, we know many people will be disappointed that the event isn’t going ahead, but we look forward to returning, along with a much better weather forecast, in 2022.”
