There has been an overwhelming response for donations of second hand school uniforms in Scarborough.

It is part of a scheme that gives the clothing for free to any families that need it or want it.

A giveaway event was held last Monday with another due this Sunday (29th August) at Westborough Methodist Church, opposite the Railway Station, from 3pm to 5pm.

Tom Clayton started the uniform recycling scheme in Scarborough.

He said:

"We've been blown away by the donations that we've had of uniforms. We've got drop off points at Tesco and Sainsbury's in the town centre and it's just been incredible. We keep emptying drop off bins week after week, day after day sometimes and I think last week, we emptied the wheelie bin at Sainbury's four times and it was full every time and that's been staggering.

"As well as the financial implications that school uniform has it can be quite prohibitive for some families some of the costs involved, but there's also some environmental as well by taking in the uniform it means it's not going into landfill or it's not going where it shouldn't.

"Even at a cheaper end, by the time you've done PE kits, shoes, trainers, jumpers and all the rest of it and got enough to cover you for a term, the cost is there. I've certainly heard in some cases of families where the choice has been between uniform and food and that's not OK. So we hope that by putting this in place, we can make a bit of a difference.

"The amount of positive comments that we've received about the scheme and about how needed it is, we had our first giveaway event last Monday and one mum came up the stairs and said 'I've been really worried about uniform and I saw this, I've come along.' We kitted her out with a full kit for her child for September."
