Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team: 'Be Adventure Smart'
It's as people may be thinking about going out into the forests or on cliffs to burn off calories
People on the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to be careful when going into forests and cliffs to burn off their festive calories.
Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team says you need to be prepared by asking three questions before setting off.
- Do I have the right GEAR?
- Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
- Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS for the day?
Ian Hugill, incident controller at Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, said: "Are you correctly equipped for the activity you're about to partake in? So map, compass, torch, batteries and suitable waterproof equipment and clothing and if there are any shelters to look after yourself if you're stuck out on the hills with an injury.
"What's the weather like? Not just when you're going out but throughout the day and when you're returning. The last thing you want to be doing is plodding through thick fog and rain and be badly prepared after a long day out on the hills.
"Have you got the necessary skills for whatever it is you're going to partake in? If you're going mountain biking, have you got the skills for the grade of track that you're going out on? If you're going out walking what's your navigational skills like?
"If you're confident that you're going out then with a bit of luck you won't see us. If unfortunately you do succumb to an injury then the advice is to stay where you are, call 999 and ask for the police and then ask for mountain rescue and we'll come out and help you."
