Busy year expected for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team
The charity says it's on track to hit more than a hundred incidents like last year
Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team says this year is already setting out to be a busy one.
It says it is on track to hit more than a hundred incidents like last year, as it has already responded to 11 since last month.
The charity also says over 1,000 hours has been committed by its volunteers so far due to call-outs, training and other related events.
Ian Hugill, Incident Controller, said: "It's been a real mixture; We've had one incident where we had to recover a vehicle that had slipped off the road in icy conditions, we've had a couple of mountain bikers we've been to, we've been out on four searches, we've rescued a couple of walkers and a runner and we were also actual to provide mutual support to one of our neighbouring teams which is the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team.
"From an operational perspective, we've recently taken on nine new volunteers who are going through the training programme with the view to getting them operational on the call-out list as soon as possible. Over the last year or two we've also developed a support group and as always we're very keen to get financial donations to help us run as an efficient charity.
He says people need to prepare before heading out by being 'Adventure Smart'. Ian added: "Ask three questions before you go out; Have I got the right skills to do what I'm going to do today? Do I know what the weather's going to do throughout the day, both when I'm out and then on my way back? And lastly do I have the right equipment? Take a map and a compass and know how to use them, take plenty of warm clothing and perhaps a group shelter because you don't know how long you're going to be out there if you do have an accident."
