North Yorkshire Police have been giving their reaction to the sentencing of five Scarborough men - who murdered another - who was stabbed to death.

As we told you last week, they've all been handed life sentences, and between them must serve a minimum of almost 100 years imprisonment in total before they can be considered for release.

26-year-old Solomon Robinson was found outside the Town Hall with serious injuries in October 2019.

Detective Superintendent Fran Naughton says the defendants got what they deserved: "Thankfully it is an unusual incident for Scarborough, but nonetheless shocking for the family and public.

"We're pleased that we've got the sentencing result, and whilst that doesn't bring Solomon back it does offer some comfort to the family for this brutal attack on him.

"These sentences are the minimum that can be considered for their release, and I think that is reassuring for the public that they will serve a long time in prison. The streets will be safer for that reason.

"This was a premediated violent attack, and Solomon was left for dead when the suspects all ran off. I just want people to realise that whether they carry a knife, use a knife or a just part of a group planning to do this: they are responsible for their actions.

"We are really grateful to the dignity of Solomon's family who have managed to sit and listen to these horrific details. We're also grateful to the public, who all came forward to provide witness statements, to provide social media coverage and CCTV - all things that we couldn't have done without.

"I want people to be reassured that we have taken these violent criminals off the street".
