Scarborough's MP says he supports the idea of it having a new town council.

It is after Borough Councillors voted in favour of a motion to create one last week when the district authority is ended.

Forming one was part of the winning Local Government Reorganisation bid from North Yorkshire County Council, which will see all of the county’s councils scrapped and replaced with new unitary authority.

Robert Goodwill said:

"When I was campaigning for North Yorkshire to become the unitary authority, part of that campaign was that I thought we should have a Scarborough Town Council in the same way that we have Parish Councils in every other bit of the constituency including Whitby. It's called a Town Council but it's a Parish Council.

"I think a Scarborough Town Council is a brilliant idea. It'll allow for example some planning applications to be considered by local people before those are considered by the County Council planning committees. It'll enable them, in the same way like Whitby has done, to take over some important services.

"We've got a number of assets in Scarborough including maybe the Spa, the Open Air Theatre and maybe some income raising like car parks so I think we need have a tough negotiation with North Yorkshire County Council to decide which powers we'll devolve to the new Town Council."
