'No progress' on Scarborough's former Futurist site
We've been asking again about what's happening with the site of the former Futurist Theatre in Scarborough
We have been asking again about what is happening with the site of the former Futurist Theatre in Scarborough.
In 2021, the leader of the council, Steve Siddons, said we would know more soon and talks were on-going with preferred developers Flamingo Land.
There is no mention of it in the draft budget which was approved by the authority's cabinet last week.
Janet Jefferson, its member for Corporate Resources, said:
"No and that concerns us because at the moment we're still left with the situation of a previous administation, so this is not within the remit of this administration and that hasn't progressed anything. We've had meetings on it but nothing has come forward.
"We don't know how that's going to progress. We want it to progress and we want it to progress to the satisfaction, especially of the people who live surrounding it, because the previous aspirations were not in-line with having people in an area close to it.
"We're still recovering from Covid so we don't know what the aspirations are of Flamingo Land as to what they want to do with it. There was no contract signed with them and so there would have to be a new architects drawing and a new plan going forward anyway."
She says it is unlikely to be resolved before the council's abolished next year for a single unitary authority:
"Yes, I would think that would be what will happen. I mean there are areas other than that, there's the rear of it and there's been all sorts of rumours about people wanting to do a hotel. At the moment there is no-one moving forward with anything on that."
