Scarborough football legend Colin Appleton dies aged 85

He lead Boro to 3 FA Trophy wins at Wembley Stadium.

Scarborough Athletic has led the tributes to honorary member and Scarborough FC legend Colin Appleton, who has died aged 85.

Appleton was born in the town, and started playing for Scarborough Athletic in 1951.

In a career spanning almost 50 years, he played 277 games for Leicester City, and also turned out for Charlton and Barrow.

He returned to Scarborough in 1969, and led he club to three FA Trophy wins at Wembley Stadium.

He later managed Hull City, Swansea City, Exeter City and Bridlington Town.

Scarborough Athletic Chairman Trevor Bull said: "We would like to thank Colin for everything he did for Scarborough FC, Scarborough Athletic and football in the town as a whole.

"He will be very sadly missed, our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."
