The Friends of Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery in Scarborough are inviting people to take a walk through the site this summer.

It is offering residents the chance to learn more about the stories of those who are buried there and to gain an insight into the town's history.

It has launched eight walks which cover a wide variety of subjects like World War One and Two.

Linda Tomczak, Chairman of The Friends of Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery, said:

"We've got a beautiful Victorian cemetery in Scarborough and I think there's still a lot of people who don't really realise what a beautiful place it is, and so we decided during lockdown because we weren't able to have face-to-face meetings, we decided we'd create a number of walks that people could come along to.

"We have done walks in the past because we always have a big fair every year but we decided that we wanted to expand the number of walks we did to cover more subjects, and so five of us went off and looked at our favourite topics and came up with this arrangement of eight different walks.

"We've got a lot of interest from people who are interseted in the first and second World Wars, we actually created our own bombardment memorial in 2014, and we've also got some stories about the arts and stories about those in peril, people who have died on the sea or by the sea.

"It's like a park land. It's not a cemetery that's active now. There are still burials taking place but there aren't any more plots available anymore. But to go and walk through there, listening to the bird song, lokoinga t the strees and reading the inscriptions on the headtones, it's a beautoful lplace to visit and the friends group do so much work to try and keep it looking beauitful."

There are 12 places available on each walk.
