Coronavirus rates across all of North Yorkshire’s seven districts are rising once again.

Figures show that more new cases are being recorded across the county as the average rate for North Yorkshire jumps to 52 per 100,000 after starting the week at 41.

Scarborough’s remains the lowest in the county despite rising to 20 from 18 yesterday.

Craven now has the highest rate in North Yorkshire, as its figures crept above 100 to 103.

The average for England is also rising, as it now stands at 81.

Earlier this week, North Yorkshire’s director of public health said that the Delta variant of Covid-19, which was first identified in India, is now the dominant strain of coronavirus in North Yorkshire and most cases are among under 30 year olds.

Louise Wallace told a North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum briefing that the variant was accelerating in most parts of the county with around 40 new cases per day.

She added the strain appeared to be spreading fastest amongst the younger population as she also urged people to take up vaccines which have now been opened up to over 21 year olds.

Ms Wallace said:

“The Delta variant does appear – as is the case nationally – to be the dominant strain of Covid-19 across North Yorkshire. In light of that, it is really important that given the variant is more transmissible we don’t let our guard down.

“We are mixing more and getting out and about, and it is really easy to get distracted and forget the basics.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is to get two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. Two doses give the best protection from getting seriously ill so please do take up both.”

Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this weekend, for anyone with symptoms to get tested.
