After the vaccines became available to the public during the recent 2021 lockdown, it became apparent that many of those at risk did not have a means of transportation to the vaccination centres.

Scarborough College and its staff came together to offer their time and resources and has now driven the 100th at-risk member of the community to get their vaccination.

The members of staff involved wanted to ensure that isolated people weren’t declining their vaccination appointments due to transport issues, particularly as the school’s minibuses were not in use over lockdown and during the holiday. One of the drivers mentioned that the volunteering brought a “lovely sense of community” to the school, as well as to the surrounding area during this difficult time.

The dedication of two school minibus drivers, Jonny and Andy, are particularly notable. In addition to ensuring that as many people’s appointments were attended as possible, these two heroes have worked above and beyond to provide a human touch, that many have been unable to enjoy during this past year.

Many shared their sincere gratitude with the College for the efforts its staff, thanking them for their assistance but especially for the opportunity to talk to someone. Some said they were more grateful to get out about than actually getting the vaccine!

Many hands make light work, and the Scarborough College team said they loved being a part of the wider effort

Headmaster of Scarborough College, Guy Emmet, said:

“We started volunteering during lockdown and for their involvement, which was deemed to be on the frontline all of a sudden, I was happy to see Andy and Jonny receive their vaccinations early. It has got more complicated since the start of term and our commitment to field trips and Duke of Edinburgh’s but we will not stop doing what we can to help our community and I could not be prouder of my colleagues of their immense contribution.”
