Scarborough restaurant turns into giant gingerbread house

The decorations have been made in a green way from recycled, upcycled and repurposed items

A Scarborough restaurant has been turned into a giant gingerbread house.

The Cockpit, located on Newborough, has teamed up with another business to decorate the inside for the festive period.

It has been made in a 'green' way but the gingerbread house is not actually edible.

Owner and chef, Chris Burton, said:

"It's full of reycled, upcycled, repurposed materials from the restaurant like tinfoil, lots and lots of paper mache and old card. There's a lot of quirky little sweets hanging around, gingerbreads painted on the walls.

"We had a little family in the other day and the parents turned around to me and said 'we're going to have to come here a lot more because they've never seen their child so quiet, because the child's just looking around at all the gingerbread items and just mesmerised. It was almost like they were in a little trance.

"This started early September. We got a company called 'GYO Art' to plan everything, to do all the little gingerbread men, to do the sheer amount of sweets and candy canes. In terms of hours, I couldn't actually say how many hours. I don't think I'd like to say how many hours.

"It's definitely a little bit more fun to upcycle, recycle, reuse and just allowing your brain and your body to turn into a creative trance because you see one product at one point and you transform it into something else. It feels like you appreciate it that little bit more."
