Scarborough residents to join climate protest in London
'The Big One' will take place for the next four days
Today is the start of a four day climate protest in central London by activist groups and coastal communities worried about flooding.
It is called 'The Big One' and it is to encourage the Government to take further action to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Stephanie Pride is from Scarborough and she has travelled down to the capital to take part.
She said: "We're facing a climate and ecological catastrophe. We're also facing a massive cost of living crisis and these issues are intimately linked. We can't kid ourselves that this is a blip that we're going to get out of in a few years.
"The reason why people like me are going to London is to get the Government and the public to wake up and really we're calling on everyone to be there. This isn't just about Extinction Rebellion, this isn't just about our cause, this is about the future of humanity.
"Communities like Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are particularly vulnerable. In fact Filey regularly comes in the top 10 of places in the UK set to experience far greater flooding, coastal erosion and tidal surges over the next 10 to 20 years.
"In the next decade I would be very, very worried if I lived in Filey. We're looking at coastal erosion potentially of up to 40 metres by 2040, the Brigg's going to go and I've seen fish in the street. We're not going to solve this problem by better drainage and quite frankly, Scarborough's going to be in the same position.
"Foreshore Road and Sandside in Scarborough are likely to be underwater by 2050. If not, then subjected to regular, severe flooding and that will have a massive impact on people, businesses and we might not even have a beach anymore. We're not going to solve that with a few sandbags."
