A popular Scarborough café is looking to expand its balcony, so more of its customers can enjoy its views of the town’s harbour.

Gillian Partridge, of The Lookout on the Pier, has applied to Scarborough Borough Council for the changes to the building.

Located on Scarborough’s Grade II listed West Pier, the café currently has a small balcony - but Ms Partridge hopes to double its size so it comes out further.

Permission was first sought for the work last year, but that scheme was withdrawn to allow changes to be made.

The new application states:

“The original Lookout café was converted in 2018/2019 and had provision for seating within the café and also on the existing balcony overlooking the harbour.

“This balcony was approximately 1.2 metres wide and 6m long.

“The café has been very successful and visitors enjoy the view from the balcony and therefore the owner is requesting that this facility is enlarged.

“This proposal is for an extension to the existing balcony to allow more customers to take advantage of views over the harbour.

“The initial scheme was for an extension to go from the existing cafe wall to the extent of the harbour wall, this however was considered to be to far.

“At a meeting between the harbour master, planning officer, applicant, steelwork contractor and architect it was agreed to restrict the extension to the width of the existing balcony and to extend out to a total length of 3m with two vertical posts 1m away from the cafe wall as support to the further 2m cantilever.”
