Struggling families in North Yorkshire are worried the reopening of schools could cost them a fortune.

Parents in the county are urging schools to relax strict policies ahead of children going back on the 8th of March.

SJ Barker is a mum of two children under 10 and runs Scarborough and Whitby mumbler, which is a parenting community platform.

She disagrees and said:

"If they can wear as much school uniform as possible, that would be great. I know some schools are doing swaps in school, so older children's uniforms can be passed down to younger children, obviously done in a Covid-secure way, but the main thing is getting children back to school and supporting the families to come out of this lockdown the best way they can.

"My kids have had second hand uniform and I have also purchased uniform from supermarkets where it's possible like trousers and polo shirts. I know they're not ideal and I know they're very much in a disposable state.

"Yes, they might not have the logos on but our schools have been very generous and understanding on this front. If you have to buy supermarket school uniform then that's fine, but schools may say that you need to have one jumper that has a logo on it for things like school photographs, So schools have been supportive of that from the beginning.

"I think it's good that uniforms look the same and I think that removes any stigma that 'my clothes are better than yours' type of attitude. However the main thing is that children are back in school, they're feeling comfortable, they're with their friends and if that means that we have to relax school uniform then maybe just change the protocol slightly during the summer term."
