Scarborough and Whitby MP defends government change of Christmas rules
Robert Goodwill says restricting the mixing of households to just Christmas Day is the right thing to do.
Scarborough and Whitby's MP has been defending his government's decision to restrict movement at Christmas.
It's after Boris Johnson's announcement on Saturday, that the relaxation of the rules will only apply on Christmas Day.
That's been criticised by some, for coming too late.
Robert Goodwill says it was the right decision.
He said:
"It's disappointing for lots of people who've made plans, but given the nature of the problem in particular the fact that in the borough of Scarborough, we're seeing cases rise rapidly and we've got higher cases than any other of the districts in North Yorkshire, people should maintain their discipline.
People in the borough are not complying with the rules. This is people having unofficial parties, people meeting together in social situations, in homes mainly and that is what's leading to the spread.
If you look at the areas in the borough where it's happening, it wouldn't surprise many people that that's where the least compliance is going on."
