Samaritans of Scarborough prepares to celebrate 50th anniversary
The charity's setting up a year of celebrations for 2022.
As we approach the New Year, it's a special one for a Yorkshire coast charity.
Samaritans of Scarborough is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
It's marking its half-century with various events to raise funds and awareness, including a Summer Ball on 9th July at Scarborough Rugby Club.
The charity will be hosting its annual Golf Tournament at North Cliff Golf Club in August.
Other events include a sponsored walk from The Sands to the Spa, coffee mornings, raffles, tombola, quiz nights and much more.
Scarborough is an affiliated branch, covering the areas of Scarborough, Whitby and Pickering, which receives no funding from the Central Organisation and needs to raise £35,000 each year to keep the service active and these events will help raise much-needed funds to continue supporting others. Samaritans is a listening service offering emotional support to anyone in crisis. Its vision is that fewer people will die by suicide.
The organisation was founded by Chad Varah. A young curate in London, in 1953 and has continued to grow, having 200 branches throughout the UK and Northern Ireland, and around 20,000 volunteers all giving their time freely. Everyday Samaritan volunteers answer about 10,000 calls for help.
Director of Samaritans of Scarborough, Libby Lorton-Gilbert, said:
"We're asking if you could kindly offer a raffle prize or a donation that will be used at one of our events in this year.
Alternatively, you could sponsor one of the 18 holes at the golf tournament (minimum £20) or why not organise your own team to take part in our 30th golf tournament?
If you feel you would like to do more, why not organise your own event in our honour. This would be fun and challenging and Samaritans of Scarborough will support you on the day, if required.
Whatever you decide, your support means so much to our volunteers but even more to our callers who reach out when they are finding life difficult".
• In return for your support, your name will be listed in a booklet covering all the events in 2022 - this publication will list all businesses who have supported the ‘Golden Year of Celebrations!’ and will be available at all events.
