Rowntree Park in York will be closed from today onwards, due to concerns about large groups meeting there and a lack of social distancing.

City of York Council announced the news on social media last night, they've since confirmed to Greatest Hits Radio that it's an ongoing closure, which will be reviewed in due course...

In response to a comment on their Facebook page, the council said the closure was 'requested by North Yorkshire Police'.

The group of volunteers who help to look after the park, the Friends of Rowntree Park, have responded to the news of the closure, saying they are 'devastated on so many levels'.

The 30-acre park is one of York's biggest and most popular green spaces, and opened exactly one hundred years ago this year.

It features playgrounds, a library-cafe, skatepark, tennis courts, basketball court and ponds.
