North Yorkshire Police are on the lookout for unsafe drivers in Scarborough and Whitby today.

It it part of Operation Boundary which is taking place all summer across the county.

Officers are checking vehicles as the easing of lockdown restrictions could bring more visitors to the coast this weekend.

Traffic Sergeant, Pete Stringer, said:

"We're looking at all the offences on the roads using a variety of both marked and plain vehicles, utilising technology such as ANPR, working with our colleagues from the safety camera vans to make sure we can get as many offences detected as possible, and making sure that motorists and their vehicles are compliant with the law and fit to be on the road.

"We've already noticed that there's an increase in the volume of traffic with the better weather and with licenced premises being open not only are the roads busy, but obviously the concern is that there may be more drink and drug drivers out on the roads this weekend.

"It's always concerning that roads will be busy. We're obviously primarily looking at vulnerable road users this weekend, so we just urge people to be patient with all types of road users, such as pedal cyclists and pedestrians, but we'll be looking to deal with as many offenders as we can today.

"Today we'll be looking at people using their mobile phones, illegal modifications such as number plates or exhausts that have been messed with so anything along those lines. We'll also be checking people's documents like licenses, insurance and tax.

"Certainly the feedback that we've had from the operation so far has been fantastic. It's been quite overwhelming the support that we've had from the public, just about every single sort of road users engaged with us and have given us really, really positive feedback so we'll keep building on that momentum that we've got."
