A charity in Scarborough say they are "overwhelmed" by the support of locals, who have flooded them with donations for Afghan refugees.

A week ago, on 19th August, the Rainbow Centre posted on social media, appealing for people to help a group of 92 who had arrived in the town, including 64 children.

Since then, they have been flooded with so many things like clothes and toiletries that they will have to stop the appeal by this weekend.

It has already been paused to allow volunteers time to catch up with the number of donations!

Rainbow Centre manager, Trish Kinsella, said: "We're still sorting through it all now. It's a wonderful problem to have.

"We know that Scarborough's such a giving community. We know that they're so generous. They've done it before with the Syrian refugees, and many years ago they did it with the Bosnian refugees, so we know that the heart's there for the people that need help.

"We've had so many people, they've been like little ants walking around the place, running around the place sorting bags, stacking bags, stacking the clothes. They've been amazing, with such generosity of spirit. There's been a really good atmosphere, and people just want to help.

"Nothing's going to get wasted"

"I don't think anybody could look at the images on the television and on social media and see what's happening in Kabul, and not want to help. They've been wanting to help, and this was an opportunity to do that. Just huge thanks!

"We're always looking for clothes, and we're always looking for toiletries and things that we can use for our client group here at the Rainbow Centre. Nothing's going to get wasted, nothing's not wanted, nothing's not needed."
