Many have been working from home through lockdown, leading to their dogs and cats becoming more dependent on their owners.
Ruth McCabe is from the RSPCA and said:
"I think it's really important that people getting puppies during lockdown make sure they teach them to be able to be left alone. So even though you find you're at home with them all the time, it's important to get them used to being left just for short periods of time.
"Socialising them with other dogs is still very important but can be tricky obviously with us having to socially distance. But it's still important that you get out and about with the puppy if the puppy's not able to go down on the floor, you could carry the puppy if you can.
"There is a real worry that once people are able to go back to work, there's going to be a lot of animals that people think they're unable to care for once they return back to work. So it's really, really important that people consider this.
"A lot of rescue centres are overwhelmed as it is and I think if we were to have the added pressure of lots more animals coming into our care for this reason, it's going to put a lot of extra pressure on rescue centres."
